Certain factors do become a concern with older pregnancies

Older "Moms-to-be" often have special needs. As pregnancies occur later in life, certain age-related complications and risks increase. These include:

  • High Blood Pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Chromosomal Disorders
  • Miscarriage
  • Placental Problems
  • Premature Deliveries/ Low Birth Weight
  • Ectopic Pregnancies
  • Fetal Distress
  • More Frequent C-sections

American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) Recommendations:

  • Take adequate folate prior to pregnancy and throughout term. (actually, recommendation is to continue taking folate into lactation period). Your needs may be higher than for younger moms-to-be.
  • Eat a variety of nutritious foods throughout term... particularly folate.
  • Begin pregnancy at healthy body weight/ BMI (not too heavy or too thin)
  • Avoid smoking and second hand smoke during pregnancy.
  • Avoid alcohol or narcotics before conception and throughout pregnancy.
  • Use medications and herbal remedies with the guidance of your physician throughout pregnancy.
