Why some women remain folate deficient
As we age, our rate of absorption and the degree to which we can metabolize our food nutrients changes. Typically, we become less efficient over time. Most of these variations take decades to amount to a health issue of any significant magnitude.
With age, many women simply lose their ability to absorb large amounts of folic acid over time. Folic acid is synthetic. Its manufacture and use has been widespread over the past generation. However, many women cannot metabolize folic acid and get little or no benefit. This impedes the use of folate for the mother and the developing child.
When folic acid is taken, it must be metabolized through a four-step process in order to become L-methylfolate and be used by the body.
Unfortunately, due to genetic limitations, up to half of all women lack the enzymes necessary to process synthetic folic acid. These women receive very little folate benefit from typical prenatal vitamins or OTC supplements.
Néevo® caplets are a prescription medical food for the dietary management of those women under a physician's treatment for vitamin deficiency throughout pregnancy, postnatal and the lactating periods. Néevo® is specifically indicated for: patients with high risk pregnancies, older OB patients, and patients unable to fully metabolize folic acid.
